Born Peter Aurness, Peter Graves was born in Minneapolis, Minnesota, in 1926. He was the younger brother of actor Jim Arness and grew up in a Methodist household. Graves actively pursued sports and music during his youth, excelling in the saxophone. As a teenager, he worked at the local radio station WMIN.

After graduating from high school, Graves studied drama at the University of Minnesota. Prior to his college years, he served in the U.S. Air Force.

Career Debut and Rise to Fame

Graves' film debutcame in the 1951 drama "Rogue River." Two years later, he gained prominence in the war film "Stalag 17" with his portrayal of a German spy.

Throughout the 1950s, Graves landed numerous roles, including leading characters in various popular films such as "Black Tuesday," "It Conquered the World," "Wichita," "The Night of the Hunter," and "Wolf Larsen." He also appeared in several television shows during this period.

In 1967, Graves' career soaredwhen he joined the cast of the popular television series "Mission: Impossible" as the leader of the Impossible Missions Force. He played the character of James Phelps until 1973 and later reprised the role in the series' 1988-1990 reboot. Graves received a Golden Globe Award in 1971 for his performance and was nominated for the award twice more. Among his other accolades, he won an Emmy Award for his narration in the television series "Biography."

Graves' iconic rolecame in 1980 with the comedy film "Airplane!" where he played the ill-fated pilot of a doomed airliner. Despite initial reservations, Graves agreed to the role upon the insistence of the filmmakers.

Later Career and Legacy

With over 130 film and television creditsto his name, Graves' on-screen presence spanned over half a century. His contributions to the film industry earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

In his later years, Graves hosted television shows, including the successful historical series "Biography" on A&E Network, which earned him an Emmy Award.

Graves was married to Joan Endressfor six decades until his passing. The couple had three daughters: Kelly Jean, Claudia King, and Amanda Lee.

Death and Legacy
