Biography of Jaroslav Halak
Jaroslav Halak is a professional Slovak ice hockey player and goaltender for the NHL team, the St. Louis Blues. He began his professional career at the age of 17 with the Slovak Extraliga team, Slovan (Bratislava). In the summer of 2003, he was drafted by the Montreal Canadiens.
Early Career
During his first four years in North America, Halak played in the Canadiens' farm teams due to the lockout and strong competition from goaltenders Cristobal Huet and David Aebischer. While playing for the Hamilton Bulldogs (AHL team), Halak broke several club records for the most shutout games and save percentages.
NHL Debut and International Success
Halak made his NHL debut on February 15, 2007, when the Canadiens needed a goaltender due to an injury to Huet. Shortly after, on March 20, Halak earned his first shutout in the NHL, helping the Canadiens win against the Boston Bruins with a score of 1-0, while making 30 saves. His performance caught the attention of the Slovak national team coaching staff, and he was selected to play in the World Championship in Moscow, where he participated in two games.
Return to Montreal and Playoff Success
At the start of the 2007/08 season, Halak was sent back to the Bulldogs, but with Huet's departure, he permanently returned to the Canadiens. Initially, Halak shared playing time with his teammate Carey Price, but by the end of the 2009/10 season, he had become the starting goaltender for the Canadiens. During the playoffs, Halak played a key role in defending the team's net.
Record-Breaking Performance
In the sixth game of the 1/8 finals series between the Canadiens and the Washington Capitals, which ended in a 4-1 victory for the team from Quebec, Halak made 53 saves and set a club record for the most saves in a single game, surpassing the legendary Ken Dryden.
Olympic Participation and Trade to St. Louis
In February 2010, Jaroslav Halak represented Slovakia as the starting goaltender in the Olympic Games. He played in all the games without being replaced and helped his team achieve their best result in Olympic history, finishing in fourth place. On June 17, 2010, Halak was traded to the St. Louis Blues.
