Biography of Hope Lang

Hope Elise Ross Lang was born on November 28, 1933, in Redding, Connecticut. She was an American actress, two-time Emmy award winner, and a nominee for the Academy Award in 1957.

Early Life and Career

Lang's father, John George Lang, was a musician and arranger for Florence Ziegfeld, while her mother, Minette Buddock, was an actress and later owned a restaurant. During her youth, Lang worked as a waitress in her mother's restaurant. One day, her photo was accidentally printed in a newspaper, which led to an offer for a job in one of New York's modeling agencies.

Lang's acting career began in 1943 on Broadway in the play "Patriots." After a decade, she made her first television appearance and in 1956, she made her film debut in the movie "Bus Stop," alongside Marilyn Monroe and Don Murray, whom she married the same year.

In 1957, Lang appeared in the film "Peyton Place," where she portrayed the character Selena Cross. Her performance gained her nominations for the Golden Globe and Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress. After divorcing her first husband in 1961, Lang married the director Alan Pakula, but they divorced in 1971.

Television Success and Later Career

From 1968 to 1970, Lang played the role of Carolyn Muir in the popular TV series "The Ghost & Mrs. Muir," for which she won two Emmy Awards and received a Golden Globe nomination. She then went on to star in "The New Dick Van Dyke Show" for three seasons. In 1974, she appeared as Charles Bronson's wife in the film "Death Wish."

In 1977, Lang returned to Broadway, where she had a successful stage career in the following years. In 1986, she married theater producer Charles Hollerith, with whom she spent the rest of her life.

Hope Lang passed away on December 19, 2003, at St. John's Hospital in Santa Monica, California, from ischemic colitis. She was 70 years old.
