Carrie Fisher: A Biography

Carrie Frances Fisher, the daughter of singer Eddie Fisher and actress Debbie Reynolds, was born on October 21, 1956. At the age of two, her parents divorced, and her father remarried Hollywood icon Elizabeth Taylor. Fisher developed a love for books during her childhood, earning her the nickname "bookworm" in her family. She immersed herself in classic literature and wrote poetry during her early years.

Fisher left Beverly Hills High School to pursue an acting career and enrolled at the Central School of Speech and Drama in London in 1973. She spent 18 months there before being accepted into Sarah Lawrence College in 1978, although she ultimately did not complete her degree due to her involvement in the "Star Wars" film series.

During her time in the "Star Wars" saga, Fisher had a three-month affair with Harrison Ford, who was still married to Mary Marquardt at the time. She revealed this in her autobiography, "The Princess Diarist," published in 2016. In 1987, Fisher released her first novel, "Postcards from the Edge," which was later adapted into a film starring Meryl Streep in 1991.

Fisher continued her acting career and appeared in various films such as "Drop Dead Fred," "Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery," "Heartbreakers," and more. She reprised her role as Princess Leia Organa in the "Star Wars" franchise, with her final appearance in the series set to release in 2017.

In her personal life, Fisher had relationships with musician Paul Simon from 1977 to 1983 and Canadian actor and comedian Dan Aykroyd in 1980. She married singer Paul Simon in August 1983 but divorced in July 1984 before reconciling and dating again.

Fisher had a daughter named Billie Catherine Lourd with talent agent Bryan Lourd in 1992. She openly discussed her bipolar disorder and addiction to cocaine and prescription drugs. Fisher used drugs as a means of self-medication, claiming they helped her feel normal. She also underwent electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) to treat her condition but eventually stopped the treatment.

Tragically, Fisher passed away on December 27, 2016, after experiencing a cardiac arrest on a flight from London to Los Angeles. She was rushed to a medical center and placed on a ventilator but did not recover. The following day, her mother, Debbie Reynolds, also passed away from a stroke while preparing for Fisher's funeral.

In her book "Wishful Drinking," Fisher mused about her own obituary, stating that she wanted it to read, "I want it reported that I drowned in moonlight, strangled by my own bra." These words reflect her unique sense of humor and the indelible mark she left on the world of entertainment.
