Childhood and Early Life
Konidela Siva Shankara Vara Prasad, better known by his stage name Chiranjeevi, was born on August 22, 1955, in Mogalthur village, near Narsapuram. His father was a police officer, and his family moved frequently to different parts of Andhra Pradesh. Chiranjeevi was primarily raised by his grandparents, who instilled in him a love of movies. He enrolled in the National Cadet Corps and participated in parades while studying at Narsapuram College and later moved to Madras (now Chennai).
Acting Debut and Regional Stardom
Chiranjeevi's film debut was a small role in the 1978 movie "Punadhirallu." He gained prominence for his charismatic performances as an antagonist in Telugu films. His popularity in his home state earned him numerous regional awards for his contributions to Telugu cinema. Chiranjeevi became the first Telugu actor to incorporate breakdance into his films and was known for his impulsive dialogue delivery. He often chose socially relevant films that celebrated Telugu culture. In 1987, he attended the Academy Awards ceremony, becoming the first South Indian actor to do so.
Bollywood Breakthrough and Social Commentary
Chiranjeevi made his Bollywood debut in 1990 with the film "Pratibandh." That same year, he starred in the Telugu fantasy "Jagadeka Veerudu Atiloka Sundari," alongside actress Sridevi. He commanded high fees and was sought after by directors for his star power. Chiranjeevi's award-winning performances in films like "Khaidi" (1983) and "Gharana Mogudu" (1992) cemented his status as a box office success.
Political Ambitions
Chiranjeevi forayed into politics, announcing his plans to retire from acting. However, he returned to the silver screen in 2017. He hosted the Telugu version of the game show "Who Wants to Be a Millionaire" and produced several Telugu films. Chiranjeevi was the first Indian actor to launch his own website, which garnered a massive fan following.
Personal Life
Chiranjeevi married Surekha Lingaiah on February 20, 1980. They have three children: daughters Sushmita and Sreeja and son Ram Charan Tej. He credits his wife with supporting his acting career and providing critical feedback. Chiranjeevi's relationship with his daughter Sreeja has been strained, but they reconciled in 2011.
Later Career and Present Status
Despite his age, Chiranjeevi remains one of India's highest-paid actors. In October 2022, he starred in the remake of the Malayalam film "Lucifer," titled "Godfather," alongside Salman Khan. He is active on social media and shares numerous family photos with his followers. Chiranjeevi maintains a fit lifestyle with morning runs and weight training.
